Etymology

Borrowed from English eyyy, from an elongated form of hey, usually chanted on hip-hop tracks as a form of hype generation.

Further gaining widespread colloquial use in the Philippines by June 2024 after BINIverse, the first concert tour by Filipino girl group BINI. The phrase eyyy was emphasized in the lyrics of BINI's song Salamin, Salamin, and eventually became associated with BINI member Sheena.

Pronunciation

  • (Standard Tagalog) IPA(key): /ˈʔej/ [ˈʔeːːɪ̯]
  • Rhymes: -ej
  • Syllabification: eyyy

Interjection

eyyy (Baybayin spelling ᜁᜌ᜔ᜌ᜔ᜌ᜔)

  1. eyyy (an expression of approval or cheering)

Usage notes

  • In the Philippines, the expression is often paired with the hand gestures similar to gang signs as the hiphop industry was often associated with gang culture. By the rise of BINI, the common gesture is a hand sign extending both thumb and pinky finger similar to the shaka sign.
