former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

English

Proper noun

(the) former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia

  1. (historical) Former long form of North Macedonia: a country in Southeast Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula; used in diplomatic circles before the 2019 agreement that produced the name North Macedonia due to the naming dispute with Greece over the former name of the country, Macedonia; abbreviation FYROM.

Usage notes

The word "former" (and the definite article "the" if used) are explicitly and intentionally in lower case, as this is a "provisional designation" and not the present or intended name of the state. Sometimes seen as derogatory due to the Republic of North Macedonia wishing to disassociate itself from Yugoslavia after its Declaration of Independence in 1991.
