Inherited from Late Latin folia, from the plural of Latin folium, probably from Proto-Indo-European *bʰolh₃yom (leaf), from *bʰleh₃- (blossom, flower). Compare Catalan fulla, Occitan fuèlha (Old Occitan folha), French feuille, Spanish hoja.
