Inherited from Late Latin folia, from the plural of Latin folium, probably from Proto-Indo-European *bʰolh₃yom (“leaf”), from *bʰleh₃- (“blossom, flower”). Compare Catalan fulla, Occitan fuèlha (Old Occitan folha), French feuille, Spanish hoja.
