      Antagl. på 700-t. inskränktes antalet R. från 24 till 16. Härigenom uppkom den 16-typiga s. k. yngre futarken.
      Probably in the 8th century, the number of runes was reduced from 24 to 16. This gave rise to the 16-rune so-called Younger Futhark.
