Etymology
From Proto-Albanian *pʰȫla, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *spōla, from Proto-Indo-European *spōlH-ó-, with a sematic change from "to split off, torn off" > "thin piece of wood, thin rod" > "flute". After PA *pʰȫla became *föł, the vowel -ö- before tautosyllabic *ł# was diphthongized to -ye-.[1]
