Vietnamese

Pronunciation

  • (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [ɣaːk̚˧˨ʔ]
  • (Huế) IPA(key): [ɣaːk̚˨˩ʔ]
  • (Saigon) IPA(key): [ɣaːk̚˨˩˨]

Etymology 1

Compare Proto-Katuic *ʔŋgaak (whence Pacoh acec (branch)).

In spite of superficial resemblance, this word is not a descendant of Chinese (MC kaewk, “horn”) (SV: giác), which had a very different vowel during the Old Chinese period, while later forms disagree with Vietnamese gạc in terms of voicing and (lack the) environment for lenition.
