Vietnamese
Etymology
gờ (“gee”) + đơn (“single”)
Pronunciation
- (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [ɣəː˨˩ ʔɗəːn˧˧]
- (Huế) IPA(key): [ɣəː˦˩ ʔɗəːŋ˧˧]
- (Saigon) IPA(key): [ɣəː˨˩ ʔɗəːŋ˧˧]
Noun
gờ đơn
- (informal) The name of the Latin-script letter G/g.
- Synonyms: giê, gờ
Usage notes
- Used to say "a 'hard' g that doesn't occur before e, ê, i". There's really no such thing as a "soft g". gi is a digraph per se rather than just a "soft g" occurring before an i. Both the digraphs gh and gi were merely borrowed from Italian orthography.
