Etymology
From Proto-Vietic *p-kəːs (“to entrust, send”), from Old Chinese 寄 (OC *C.[k](r)aj-s) (B-S) (SV: ký). Cognate with Muong cới. Compare North Central Vietnamese gưởi and Southern Vietnamese gởi.
Attested as Northern Middle Vietnamese gưởi in Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651). This particular form seems to have survived, albeit endangered, until the modern days in some localities of the Red River Delta like Hà Tây, Hanoi, and Hải Dương.[1]
