Compound of gardu (“post, station”) + induk (“central”, literally “main”), calque from Japanese 一次変電所 (ijihendensho, “primary substation”). Compare Dutch energiecentrale (“power station”, literally “energy centre”) and Dutch onderstation (“substation”).
