gjah
Albanian
Etymology
Multiple theories:
- From Proto-Albanian *jaga, from Proto-Indo-European *yeǵʰo- (compare German jagen (“to hunt”), Tocharian A yoke (“desire”), Sanskrit यहु (yahú, “restless”)). Related to gjuaj.
- From Proto-Albanian *źakʰa-, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *źahka, from Proto-Indo-European *sh₁-s-ko-, originally relating to the unleashing of dogs.[1]
- From Proto-Albanian *ʝakʰa-, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *i̯ahka, from Proto-Indo-European *sh₁-s-ko-. Identical to the second etymology, except for the initial sound.[2] In all cases considered related to gjuaj.[3]
