Etymology
Compare Danish gøre kål på/af, Norwegian Bokmål gjøre kål på/av and Swedish ta kål på. Literally, “make cabbage on”.
Variants with more expected make cabbage of (someone or something) are very rare in Danish and Bokmål, but may be the original form according to NAOB (in sense of make a cabbage soup of someone), alternatively related to Swedish kola vippen (“die”) probably of Finnish origin (whence Trøndersk kållå veppen (“die”)). The phrases like make a soup of (someone) are otherwise present in other languages, like e.g. Russian.
