Not attested classically. Coined in the plural by Paracelsus in the early Renaissance era, possibly from a compound of Ancient Greek γῆ (gê, “earth”) and νομός (nomós, “dwelling”). Also compare Ancient Greek γνώμη (gnṓmē).
