Etymology

From a South Slavic language, especially eastern dialects, compare Old Church Slavonic граждь (graždĭ, “manger”), Bulgarian гражд (gražd, “barn”); ultimately from Proto-Slavic *gorďь (“fence”), related to Proto-Slavic *gordъ (“fortification, town”).[1][2][3]
