From a Proto-Indo-European *h₂grem- (to gather), which may be an extended form of *h₂ger- (idem), with the original sense of the Latin likely "armload, embrace". Compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *grā́mas (bunch), Ancient Greek ἀγείρω (ageírō, to gather), Proto-Slavic *gromada (heap, pile), Lithuanian grùmulas (lump), Proto-Germanic *krimmaną (to push, crumble).[1] See also grex (flock, herd).
