grunda

Latin

Etymology

De Vaan and Weiss argue that it is most likely a back-formation from suggrunda, noting that the form grunda is attested much later than suggrunda. Ultimately, the term may be connected to Proto-Italic *ɣrondā, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrondʰ-h₂ (collective), from *gʰrendʰ- (beam, plank).[1][2]
