Inherited from Latin gypsum. First attested in 1309.[1] Cognates include Italian gesso and Spanish yeso.

- plaster (a mixture of lime or gypsum, sand, and water, sometimes with the addition of fibres, that hardens to a smooth solid and is used for coating walls and ceilings)

- (medicine) cast (a supportive and immobilising device used to help mend broken bones)
- chalk (a piece of chalk used for drawing and writing on a blackboard)
