From Middle Cornish glan, glawn, from Old Cornish gluan, from Proto-Brythonic *gwlan, from Proto-Celtic *wlanā. Cognate with Breton gloan, Gaulish *wlanā (whence English flannel via Old French), Irish and Scottish Gaelic olann, Manx ollan, and Welsh gwlân.
