From Proto-West Germanic *gurwiju, from Proto-Germanic *gurwijō, variant of *gurwijaz (manure, dung). Alternatively, yet less likely, from Proto-West Germanic *garwiju, from Proto-Germanic *garwijō (yeast, filth, sediment, excrement), whence Middle High German gerwe (yeast, residue, excretion, faeces).
