Etymology 1
From the hé- ~ hí- form of the obsolete noun hiu (“void, shortage”) + -ja (possessive suffix). Compare hiány (“lack”) and hiányos (“lacking, deficient”).[1]

Declension
It is only used with certain case suffixes, most commonly híján, sometimes híjával, rarely híjában, híjától, híjára and híját (as well as plural híjuk (“their lack”)); see also its morphological chart.
