Alternative forms

Etymology

From Proto-Polynesian *faka.

Prefix

haʻa-

  1. alternative form of hoʻo- (causative prefix)
    haʻa- + ‎lele (to fly) → ‎haʻalele (to abandon)
haʻa- + ‎ʻawe (to carry on the back) → ‎hāʻawe (to carry on the back)
haʻa- + ‎ʻāpuka (to cheat) → ‎haʻāpuka (to make cheat).

Usage notes

The variant form hā- is found before short vowels and the glottal stop and the form ha- is found before the glottal stop followed by a long vowel. Sometimes the difference in meaning between the base form and the prefixed form is minor (as in the second example above) and a true causative is formed by prefixing hoʻo- to the prefixed form.
