From Proto-Finnic *haamu. Cognates include Karelian huamu, Votic aamo, and dialectal Finnish hahmo, haamo, probably from Proto-Finno-Permic *šamɜ. Other cognates include Erzya чама (čama, “face”), Moksha шама (šama, “face”).
