Etymology

Inherited from Old Polish hajtować, said to be from Hungarian hajt (“to drive someone hard; slave away, work hard”) +‎ -ować, originally used in an ironic sense “to dawdle, loaf.”[1] However, it may also be an alteration of hajtąć (“to sway, rock”).
