handwand

English

Etymology

hand +‎ wand

Noun

handwand (plural handwands)

  1. A hand-held wand for scanning or for reading an electronic tag.
    • 1991, Australian Mammal Society (volume 14, numbers 1-2, page 148)
Readings were taken by passing the handwand either over the dorsal surface of the animal or running it over the surface of a bag holding it. It is necessary to alter the orientation of the handwand during this activity to detect the presence of a tag.
    • 1993, Audit of Airport Security: Fderal Aviation Administration, page iii:
The object was not detected because the "handwand" screening was poorly conducted.
