From the obsolete interjection hoj. Compare Dutch hoi, English hoy. See also ohoj (ahoy).

  1. (somewhat colloquial) to holler (shout, often to attract attention)
    Hojta till om ni behöver nåt!
    Holler if you need anything! [with the optional till expressing a sudden and brief action]
    "Hallå, ni där borta!", hojtade han
    "Hey, you over there!", he hollered
