Etymology
Borrowed from Kapampangan ingay (“noise”), older form of inge, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qiŋəʀ (“loud, unpleasant noise”). Expected inherited form for Tagalog would be *ingig, *inig. Compare Ilocano ingar (“growl”), Pangasinan ingal (“noise”), Hanunoo ingay (“noise”), Cebuano ingog (“piercing sound”), and Malay hingar (“noise”).
