Etymology
From Proto-East Cushitic *g[i/u]lb+ (Bender, 2020), from Proto-Cushitic *gilb-/*gulb-.[1] Cognates include Afar gulub, Oromo jilba, Jiiddu jolow,[2] Qimant gə́rə́b, Blin gərb, Beja gulub, Saho gūmba, Xamtanga [script needed] (gərbə), Iraqw gurungura and Sidamo guluphpho, Hadiyya gurubbo. furthermore Amharic ጉልበት (gulbät).
Possibly related to Proto-Semitic *birk- (“knee”) which undergoes strong metathesis (*birk- > *kirb- > *gilb-).
