  1. (US) A school for children who have completed elementary school or grade school, but are not yet old enough for high school. It often includes grades 7 and 8, and possibly also 6 or 9.

      In California the term originally used was "intermediate high school," later shortened to "intermediate school," but the term "junior high school" is rapidly supplanting the others.
  2. (Philippines) A secondary education school for grades 7-10 (a continuation of elementary school). It is succeeded by senior high school.
