Inherited from Old Swedish qvāþa, kādha, kode, from Old Norse kváða. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk kvae and Icelandic kvoða. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʷet-, whence also English cud, German Kitt and Sanskrit जतु (jatu).
