From Middle Low German kōpman, from Old Saxon kōpman, from Proto-West Germanic *kaupamann, cognate with English chapman and German Kaufmann.

Equivalent to købe (“buy”) +‎ mand (“man”). Possibly partially inherited from Old Norse kaupmaðr, the native parallel to the Low German.
