Etymology

From earlier kataw-an, from Southern Luzon axis *katawʔan (body). Likely a syncopic form of *katawuan, from a root equivalent to Tagalog tao (human; person); thus equivalent to tawo +‎ ka- -an. Not directly from Tagalog as Tagalog tawo, older variant of tao, does not end with a glottal stop. This may not be true in the past. Compare Kapampangan katauan and Remontado Agta kataw-an. See also katauhan.
