Borrowed from Byzantine Greek κάθισμα (káthisma, “seat”).

Noun

kathisma (plural kathismas or kathismata)

  1. A division of the psalter, used by Eastern Orthodox Christians and Eastern Catholics who follow the Byzantine Rite.
  2. A troparion, or hymn, chanted at matins after each such division of the psalter.
  3. A hinged seat used in monastic churches, having a full back attached to the wall.
