Etymology

From Proto-Polynesian *taqe-tuli (compare with Maori tāturi, Rarotongan tāturi, Tahitian tāturi)[1] combining *taqe + *tuli corresponding to kae kuli “deafening excrement” (compare with Maori taeturi, Tongan teʻetuli) – see also nouns like kūkaenalo “beeswax” (lit. “bee excrement”) and kūkaehao “rust” (lit. “iron muck/excrement”)[2][3]
