Etymology

Learned borrowing from Latin collegium.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [koˈleˀɡjɔm]
  • Rhymes: -eˀɡjɔm
  • Hyphenation: kol‧le‧gium

Noun

kollegium n

  1. dormitory (housing complex where students live for rent, consisting of single rooms, shared facilities and possibly smaller apartments)
  2. collegium (circle of persons who exercise a common power or who have a professional community)

Usage notes

The fact that the -ium ending is dropped in inflections has given rise to the (sometimes proscribed) spelling kollegie. Similar words affected by this process are gymnasium, ambolatorium.
