Maybe a euphemistic refashioning of pokker, from Middle Low German pocke, from Proto-Germanic *pukkaz, *pukkǭ (“pock; swelling”), cognate with English pock, pox, German Pocke. Alternatively from kopper, the plural of kop (“cup”) (from the cups used for blood-letting).
