Usage notes
In common parlance kruidnoten are more often called pepernoten, the name of a different kind of baked confectionery related to Sinterklaas celebrations. This usage is proscribed by some, and bakers and grocery stores make a clear distinction between pepernoten and kruidnoten.
Usage of pepernoot as a synonym of kruidnoot was already recorded in the 1931 dictionary Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal, at the time most commonly in southern parts of the Netherlands.[1]
