Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *-laŋ (bluebottle fly), from Old Chinese (OC *m-rəŋ, “housefly”) (B-S) (SV: dăng). Chut [Rục] cognate məlaŋ¹ suggests the presence of pre-syllable *m- in Proto-Vietic.

This is an example of a Sinitic loanword borrowed at the stage when the shift *m-r- > *m-l-[1] already happened. Compare lẽ (reason) < Middle Vietnamese mlẽ, from Chinese () (phonetic (OC *m(ə).rəʔ)).
