Etymology
Noun
lamaism (uncountable)
- (dated, potentially offensive) Synonym of Tibetan Buddhism.
Usage notes
- Common through the racist and imperialist 19th and early 20th centuries, the term is now avoided by scholars of Buddhism for its negative associations and implicit judgment that Tibetan and Mongolian Buddhism are impure forms that require a name separate from Buddhism proper.
