Inherited from Middle French laniere, from Old French lasniere (compare Old French lasne (“strap, thong”), alteration of earlier nasliere, from nasle (“strap, thong”) from Old Dutch *nastila, of Germanic origin, from Frankish *nastilu (“strap”). Akin to Old High German nestila (“band, strap”) (German Nestel (“string, strap, lace”)).
