lekplats

Swedish

Etymology

lek (play; lek) +‎ plats (place)

Noun

lekplats c

  1. a playground
    Synonym: (often larger) lekpark
  2. (biology) a place (usually identical from year to year) where animals engage in lek

Usage notes

When playground is used more generally for the outdoor recreational area at a school (possibly just with some basketball hoops or the like), Swedish prefers skolgård (schoolyard) to lekplats (playground). Lekplats emphasizes an area with playground equipment or the like.
