letter grade
English
Noun
letter grade (plural letter grades)
- (education) A letter of the alphabet assigned as an evaluation of schoolwork.
- Do you give letter grades for class participation, or just for homework and exams?
Usage notes
- Schemas vary by institution; an A is generally the best, and an F is often the worst. (F is often said to stand for fail or flunk.) Passing grades may also carry a plus or minus sign, with an A-minus (A-) better than a B-plus (B+) and so on. A grade-A or A-grade version of something is an exemplar of its type, whether good or bad (for example, a grade-A student [good] or a grade-A bozo [bad]).
