Etymology

From Middle French losange, losenge, from Old French losenge (a drawn shape on fabric, rhombus), of obscure origin. Perhaps ultimately from Gaulish *lausā (flat stone, stone slab). Alternatively, perhaps from earlier Old French losenge (flattery, deceitful praise), from the notion the shape was reminiscent of the square flat slabs of tombstones upon which fulsome epithets of undue praise and flattery were written.
