Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *mertja, from Proto-Indo-European *mers (to trouble). Compare Latin marzjan (to hinder, offend), Lithuanian marši̇̀nti (make forget), Ancient Greek μαραίνω (maraínō, to rub, consume), Hittite [Term?] (/⁠marriattari⁠/, will destroy). Alternatively, a borrowing from Serbo-Croatian mrziti (to hate).
