By surface analysis, mā- (stative prefix) + ʻalo (“to dodge”). Compare Maori makaro (“dimly visible”), Toki Pona makalo (“flash”), from Proto-Polynesian *ma-kalo (“be briefly visible, appear then disappear, flash by”).
