Etymology
Originally referred to seashore dropseed (Sporobolus virginicus), which is now also called mānienie maoli (literally “native Bermuda grass”). Both of these varieties were introduced from the United States and as a consequence are also called mānienie haole (literally “foreign Bermuda grass”).
