mặt nạ
Vietnamese
Etymology
mặt (“face”) + nạ. The latter syllable is of Tai origin; compare Proto-Tai *ʰnaːꟲ (“face”) (whence Thai หน้า (nâa), Lao ໜ້າ (nā)).
Pronunciation
- (Hà Nội) IPA(key): [mat̚˧˨ʔ naː˧˨ʔ]
- (Huế) IPA(key): [mak̚˨˩ʔ naː˨˩ʔ]
- (Saigon) IPA(key): [mak̚˨˩˨ naː˨˩˨]
Noun
(classifier cái, chiếc) mặt nạ • (𩈘𩈩)
Usage notes
- Full-face "masks" are not typically thought of as the same as surgical "masks". For surgical masks, including those that are non-surgically, casually worn, use khẩu trang instead.
