madadh rua

Irish

Etymology

Literally, red-haired dog, just as madra rua.

Since the term madadh is not generally used in Munster (where madra is preferred), Sjoestedt-Jonval considers the pronunciation /ˌmˠɑd̪ˠəˈɾˠuə/ to be a pronunciation of madra rua with dissimilatory loss of the first r.[1]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˌmˠɑd̪ˠə ˈɾˠuə/[1], /ˌmˠad̪ˠə ˈɾˠuə/[2]
  • (Ulster, also) IPA(key): /ˌmˠad̪ˠu ˈɾˠuə/[3]
