Borrowed from Betawi [Term?], from Javanese ꦩꦼꦫꦁ (merang, dried rice straw; rice chaff), from Old Javanese mĕraṅ, mraṅ (chaff of rice, rice-straw), probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *krɔŋ (hard) (compare Khmer ក្រាំង (krang, to dry off), Thai กรัง (grang, to dry off)).
