  1. (transitive, phonetics) To change to a monophthong (as by removing a vowel).
    • 2025, Cid Swanenvleugel, The Pre-Roman Elements of the Sardinian Lexicon, page 132:
      Inherited -au- was monophthongized to -a- in Sardinian. These forms must therefore go back to [] *aCurri, with an elided consonant.
  2. (intransitive, phonetics) To become a monophthong.
