naħaq

Maltese

Root
n-ħ-q
1 term

Etymology

From Arabic نَهَقَ (nahaqa). Root-internal -h- does not normally become -ħ-. The development is probably expressive as it preceded the general loss of /h/. Vassalli already gives this word with /ħ/.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈna.ħaʔ/

Verb

naħaq (imperfect jinħaq, verbal noun nħiq)
