Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *əndíhi/a-, further reconstructions disputed:

  1. From Pre-Proto-Albanian *an-dikʰí/á-, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)ano-dih₁sḱé/ó- (to hurry).[1]
  2. From Pre-Proto-Albanian *an-tikʰí/á-, from Proto-Indo-European *(h₂)ano-tigʰsḱé/ó- (to run).[2]

In both cases, the meaning "to run, hurry" becomes "to help". Possibly cognate to Greek δίεμαι (díemai, to hurry, to drive), Sanskrit दीयति (dīyati, to fly, to soar).
